The marathon, one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896, is chosen to close all Olympic Games for a reason. It is a test of both physical and mental endurance as well as technical and tactical expertise. Athletes are required to draw on all their reserves to complete the race – a true example of the Olympic spirit. Almost exactly a year ago Kipsang won the 2013 Berlin Marathon in a world record time of 2:03.23, becoming the third Kenyan to hold this honour and entering into the company of some of the greatest runners of all time. Adding to his legacy, he won Olympic bronze in London 2012.
